Tea, Silesian style

Was the kahlok only for heating? Who should a young couple visit with a kołocz? Why do some cups have numbers on them? Who could you expect to turn up at your gyburstag? „Przy byfyju” is a creative educational workshop designed for the Silesian Museum in Katowice. The inspiration was Silesia itself — its dialect, its customs and its remarkable history and culture. The main aim was to bring participants closer to the customs that used to govern Silesian homes. The workshop opened with a fascinating story about family celebrations and the everyday objects that went with them. Participants also visited the History of Upper Silesia exhibition — the old kitchen in a familok tenement. At the end everyone designed their own mug or cup and a small plate, all inspired by the traditional tableware patterns in the museum’s collection.
